Shake Off The Ghosts

Went on a bit of a nostalgia trip earlier this week. Re-checked out Simple Minds' Sparkle In The Rain (the re-released, remastered double CD with accompanying b-sides) and realized some of these lyric segments I've been carrying around with me for decades in some sort of hard-to-get-to location in my brain near the recycle bin, that rear their ugly head every now-and-then but I just can't seem to place, (I always thought it was some U2 song) come from this album, "I will be there/I will be there/I will be there," from Up On The Catwalk, "I couldn't sleep a wink last night... Run till we come, until we be/speed your love to me," among others... Glad I only lost one day to this endeavor. Thought about carrying on the next day to re-check out, after nearly thirty years, Sons and Fascination & Sister Feelings Call, both of which I remember listening to on a dubbed cassette of on a Walkman(!), whilst taking over a friend's paper-route during the dark cold months of January-March. Anyway, the music shines, a funky, synthy, albeit '80s shine, but Jim Kerr's voice just won't stop. It seems as though he's singing all the way through each song, front and center, giving these songs a sort of claustrophobia that could have been avoided, and as some poor-mans version of Bono, to make things worse. But as a teenager growing up in the American midwest, this album was everything to me for a short while. And all that being said, re-hearing the last song, the instrumental, "Shake Off the Ghosts" nearly gave me goosebumps. What a timeless beauty.
